Crucial Conversations
Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High
This is a New York Times bestseller and one that I am finding very, very enlightening.
The book takes you into different patterns of communication and helps you see the different styles ie controlling versus withdrawing (my two favorites), and the issues with each.

Sacred Contracts
This book, though not new, continues to find it’s way onto my coffee table.
Caroline has taken the language of the archetype and applied it to the story of the souls journey, or sacred contract. Essentially what archetypal patterns is the individual working with in this life, which is different for each of us.

“30% of sunscreens don’t offer enough protection from the carcinogenic UVA rays.” This comes from the Enviornmental Working group’s 2009 study.
WOW!! That sure got my attention as I can no longer bake in the sun do to the direct effect the sun has had on my skin. It also turns out that some chemicals in sunscreens with the highest SPF can cause tissue damage & hormone disruption, according to the study.
Plus as far as tanning beds go, well……..we don’t even need to go there. The risk of skin cancer is off the charts.
So I investigated the Enviornmental Working Groups web site, www.ewg.org. There is a ton of info on thousands of consumer products BUT be advised they want you to sign up with email & zip code to access the info and be on their list for updates. I have not found this to be a spam issue personally.
I have found this site to be a wealth of information, as an example to get to the sunscreen section from the home page, click on “Health/Toxics”, then click on “Cosmetic Database”. Here you can input your favorite sunscreen, makeup, after shave etc and it will give you a numbered profile about the product. Now how useful is that!!
Sadly, my favorite sunscreen from Neutrogena did not fair well.
In the most recent issue of OUTSIDE MAGAZINE they too researched sunscreens and came up with the best in various categories, which are summarized as follows, from the article by David LaHuta;
For water: Soleo Organics all natural sunscreen SPF 30, water resistant up to 3 hours. www.soleousa.com, $22.
For Everyday: Neutrogena Men oil free moisture SPF 30, www.neutragena.com $6.
For endurance: Scape SPF 50 athlete sunblock, www.scapelabs.com, $14.
For climbers: Kinesys SPF 30 fragrance free spray, www.kinesys.com, $7.
For high altitude: Dermatone skin protector with Z-Cote, www.dermatone.com, $6.
I have also found OUTSIDE MAGAZINE, www.outsideonline.com, or to subscribe, subscribe.outsidemag.com/welcome.aspx?axb=3 to be a wealth of info on outside gear, safety & who’s doing what kind of extreme sports that some of my very athletic clients are involved in.
So with all that info you can go have fun in the sun !!
